About New Hampshire

New Hampshire is a state located in the New England region of the northeastern United States. It is bordered by Massachusetts to the south, Vermont to the west, Maine and the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and the Canadian province of Quebec to the north. The state was one of the original thirteen colonies that formed the United States. The first inhabitants of New Hampshire were Native American tribes, including the Abenaki, Pennacook, and Sokoki. The first European settlers arrived in the early 1600s, primarily from England. The first permanent settlement was established in 1623 at Odiorne's Point in what is now Rye. In 1641, New Hampshire was granted a royal charter by King Charles I of England, making it a separate colony from Massachusetts. The charter was later revoked in 1679, and New Hampshire was re-incorporated into Massachusetts. In 1741, New Hampshire was separated from Massachusetts and became an independent royal colony. The first governor of the colony was Benning Wentworth, who served from 1741 to 1766. During this period, New Hampshire was a major center of shipbuilding and trade. In 1776, New Hampshire became the first of the original thirteen colonies to declare its independence from Great Britain. It was also the ninth state to ratify the United States Constitution in 1788. In the 19th century, New Hampshire experienced a period of rapid industrialization and population growth. The state became a major producer of textiles, paper, and other manufactured goods. It also became a popular tourist destination, with the White Mountains and other natural attractions drawing visitors from around the world. Today, New Hampshire is a vibrant and diverse state with a strong economy and a high quality of life. It is home to a variety of industries, including technology, manufacturing, tourism, and agriculture. It is also home to several prestigious universities, including Dartmouth College and the University of New Hampshire.
